The Sun and Your Skin
Visibly ageing skin is caused mostly by sun damage, not just by age itself.
Deep lines, leathery texture, blotches, freckles and broken capillaries - all these symptoms follow from the action of sunrays on unprotected skin. Especially if you burn easily, have red or blonde hair, or a family history of melanoma.
Yet the effects may not start to show up for many years, and during this time-lapse, the damage becomes irreparable. No amount of creams will undo it.
More serious is the link with skin cancer, now rapidly on the increase worldwide. Intensive sunbathing, whether on a beach or a sunbed, is widely believed to damage your immune system.
One defence is a daily sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 6, every day, increased to SPF 20, for long periods of exposure.
But sunscreens alone may not be enough. Research has proved that daily supplements of carotenoids provide vital extra protection against UV action. So supplement sunscreen with carotenoids, and you can help your skin to resist summer sun radiation damage.
